SAN JOSE, CA -- JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) today announced new additions to its WaveReady(TM) Series of low-cost modules for use by service providers in metro, access and enterprise optical networks.

"We believe WaveReady's wavelength access service platforms allow service providers to integrate a variety of communication technologies and architectures while avoiding compatibility issues and concerns about changing standards," said Thomas Znotins, senior vice president of JDS Uniphase's Subsystems Products Group. "We believe WaveReady eliminates expensive guess-work regarding compatibility and worry about changing standards. With the latest modules, service providers can now use WaveReady in slim-profile or dense system configurations, at any rate, and with any type of connection for a variety of applications."

WaveReady's latest modules have already been deployed in video networking applications. For example, the WaveReady 3100 platform was used to provide fiber protection for video equipment between central offices for Bell Canada's ExpressVu video service.

The latest hardware and software additions to the WaveReady Series are:

  • The WSH-540LX and the WSH-550SX are two-port dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical regenerators for the WaveReady 3000 product line. They convert 1260 nm to 1360 nm optical signals into 15xx DWDM wavelengths for access onto metro networks. These two regenerators provide 3R (reshape, re-time and regenerate) operation, remote management capability using existing wavelength channels, and data rate limiting.

  • The WaveReady 2010 is a Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) fiberoptic extender that increases the maximum interconnect distance of a GigE switch up to 67 miles. The WaveReady 2010 enables local area network technology to be extended to the metro area network level.

  • The WaveReady 3100 is a compact (1RU), two-slot, rack-mount platform that is ideally suited to remote terminal and stand-alone network applications. It provides power, monitoring, and configuration for each WaveReady 3000 Series module and the optional WaveReady communications module.

  • The WaveReady Node Manager is an intuitive graphical user interface software package used in conjunction with the communications module to provide easy-to-use fault and status management functions for remote and local WaveReady equipment.
