Hutchison Launches Ethernet

HONG KONG -- Hutchison Global Communications Limited ("HGC") today announced that it has launched the first Ethernet service in Hong Kong to connect Beijing and Guangdong Province, providing highly cost-effective and flexible multipoint-to-multipoint Metro Ethernet connectivity for enterprises of all sizes in these three places.

HGC partners with China Telecom to offer this novel service connecting Hong Kong with Beijing and Guangdong Province, which adopts an Inter-Autonomous System and is built on Virtual Private LAN service (VPLS). Riding on an extremely scalable Internet Protocol (IP)/ Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, its service quality is considerably enhanced.

Ethernet, which replaces cross-area Wide Area Network (WAN) with a Local Area Network (LAN) to LAN network architecture, provides stable and easy-to-operate network services of low operating costs. In recent years, there has been a growing interest among enterprises in Ethernet as a telecom interface.

The easy-to-manage Ethernet, which supports excellent network operation performance, allows user-enterprises to "plug and play" without the need to reconfigure their system or install new and customised equipment, saving substantial investment in hardware. In addition, Ethernet is extremely flexible in terms of network connection. Enterprises can expand or adjust network connection scale and bandwidth at any time when needs arise by using Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet interface. Also, they can utilise Layer 2 Ethernet for complete control of network operation.
