Highwave Launches Fiber Lasers

LANNION, France -- Highwave Optical Technologies (NouveauMarché: HGWO), a leading technology supplier of active fibres and subsystems for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) telecoms systems, the fibre laser industry, fibre optic sensors and Defense markets announced today the launch of a new range of products centred around fibre lasers.

This new generation of powerful lasers enables the company to penetrate new markets such as industrial lasers, instrumentation and military applications. Entry into these markets reinforces Highwave Optical Technologies’ position in optical telecommunications, a position which is confirmed by regular growth in turnover for this area.

The industrial laser market represents more than 1 billion dollars per annum and the various applications include marking, engraving, welding, cutting of various materials. The lasers used today are gas lasers (CO2 or Excimerlasers) or solid lasers (YAG lasers). Fibre lasers today are in direct competition with YAG lasers and offer numerous advantages, especially in terms of cost (operation and maintenance) and reliability.

"The technologies we have developed and qualified for the telecoms sector now enable us to access new markets and create new product platforms", explains David Pureur, Technical Director of Highwave Optical Technologies. "We can then effectively capitalise on all the R&D efforts we have made over the last few years".

"Our premier product (HWT-ILF-Yb10) is a 10 watt optical laser which operates at a wavelength of almost 1 micron. The optical return is 70 % for single mode beam quality (M2 of 1). To achieve this power, we use fibres and injection devices which are compatible with the double gain technology used within the company. We are planning to launch several higher powered products over the coming year. This first generation of high power laser is primarily intended for the materials marking market".
