LONDON -- FlexLight Networks™, the optical network access pioneer delivering the industry’s first Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) solution for the first mile, today announced that it has been awarded formal certification to import its optical access equipment into Russia for use over the country’s national telecommunications network.

Russia remains the largest telecoms market in the East and Central Europe region, worth a total of US$4.4bn at the end of 1999. Official telecoms certification represents an important milestone, not only for FlexLight, but for Russian service providers who are demanding optical access for delivering broadband services for Fibre to the Building (FTTB) applications using GPON.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates FlexLight’s commitment to the Russian marketplace and to continuing the momentum of strong growth seen in the telecoms sector,” said Gary Lee, CEO, FlexLight Networks™. “We have been working together with four major business partners and distributors in Russia and are delighted that we will be working even more closely with them following today’s crucial certification approval.”

FlexLight's suite of GPON-Based, optical access products leverages leading-edge technology to deliver a solution that conquers last-mile bandwidth bottlenecks and optimises service flexibility. The company develops comprehensive platforms for optical communications between a central office (regional communication hubs) and local communications points (an optical communications center in an office building or a campus). These platforms are based on high-speed Passive optical technologies, including CWDM (Coarse wavelength division multiplexing) for increasing the number of light waves that can be carried simultaneously by each PON.

FlexLight’s proposed network facilitates the transmission of all existing types of services (Voice , Video and Data) as well as those planned for the future, from the main Central Office of the Service Providers to as close as possible to the end user.
