Kamo's K-PowerNet uses EAPS failover capability to deliver resilient metro network

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Extreme Networks(R), Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EXTR) innovative Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) capability, which delivers sub-50 millisecond recovery on ring-based routed or switched Gigabit Ethernet networks, is enabling KAMO's K-PowerNet to deploy a reliable, multi-state Metro network.

KAMO's K-PowerNet is a leading-edge data, voice and video service provider offering scalable and flexible Ethernet data services in the four-state metropolitan areas in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. KAMO's K-PowerNet has been utilizing Extreme Networks' EAPS capability on its network to achieve carrier-class resiliency with sub-50 millisecond failover for services that are supported by Extreme Networks' Alpine(R) switching platform, retail fiber optic cabling and wireless network connectivity.

With Extreme Networks' EAPS capability, data, video and voice over IP services are maintained on the network even if a fiber strand is cut or interrupted, allowing communications to continue smoothly.

The benefit of EAPS technology, available with Extreme Networks' switching solutions, is its use of off-the-shelf Ethernet technology to deliver rapid failover and resiliency. This allows Ethernet and IP to equal the performance of legacy SONET technology at a lower cost point. This allows carriers and enterprises to implement IP networks that are both simple and scalable. Progressing as an industry-accepted technology, EAPS is recognized as RFC #3619 by the IETF Internet and networking standards body.

K-PowerNet has implemented a ring-based network with fault tolerant design and redundant configurations utilizing Layer 2 VLAN capabilities to segment customer traffic. K-PowerNet's Metro services run over a fiber-optic ring spanning more than 700 miles, where data speeds from 1Mbps to 1 Gigabit are available for Internet access and value added services. By implementing Extreme Networks' high performance Ethernet switching solutions, K-PowerNet is realizing cost advantages while increasing bandwidth choices for its customers. For example, four megabits of bandwidth can be delivered at prices on par with T-1 services that offer 1.5 megabits of bandwidth.
