ZTE is deploying TranSwitch's Envoy-CE2 Ethernet controller in Fast Ethernet (FE) service interface cards

SHELTON, Conn. -- TranSwitch® Corporation (NASDAQ:TXCC - News), a leading provider of high-speed semiconductor solutions for voice, data and video communications, today announced that ZTE Corporation (PNK:ZTCOF.PK), a leader in China's telecommunications equipment market, is deploying its Envoy(TM)-CE2 Ethernet controller in Fast Ethernet (FE) service interface cards used in their ZXR10 carrier-class IP/MPLS routers. The carrier-class router is used in Internet backbones, metropolitan area networks (MANs), large intranets, and intelligent residential networks.

"ZTE needed a proven, carrier-class Ethernet controller for its Fast Ethernet service interface cards," said Weipu Li, hardware director of ZTE's Datacom System Department. "TranSwitch's Envoy-CE2 integrated gluelessly to our custom packet forwarding ASIC via a SPI-3 packet interface."

"The Envoy-CE2 and Envoy-CE4 have proven themselves in dozens of OEM products since their introduction in March 2004," said Brian Stroehlein, product marketing manager for TranSwitch's Envoy family. "ZTE is going global with a wide range of telecom and datacom equipment. These design wins are an important milestone for the Envoy family in the broadband access market."

The Envoy-CE4 incorporates four Media Access Controllers (MACs), while the Envoy-CE2 contains two MACs. Each MAC is configurable at boot-up as a single Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000-compliant) or octal Fast Ethernet (10/100-compliant) interface, thereby enabling the devices to support up to 32 Fast Ethernet ports or four Gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports. An extended FE buffer mode allows Envoy-CE4 to support eight FE ports with 31 KB of ingress and 16 KB of egress buffering. Envoy-CE2 can support four FE ports in this mode.

The SPI-3 interface can operate at up to 125 MHz, allowing throughputs of up to four Gbps, and it directly interfaces with the Intel IXP2350 and other network processors. The support for master mode on the SPI-3 allows a glueless interface with standard SPI-3-based VCAT/GFP mappers for delivery of Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH. Per-port flow control on the SPI-3 interface prevent head-of-line blocking, and large on-chip buffers enable extended distances with flow control. The Envoy-CE4 and Envoy-CE2 support jumbo (9,600 bytes) and super jumbo (12,000 bytes) frames on both the Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Envoy-CE4 and Envoy-CE2 provide port muxing and a customer-programmable routing tag encapsulation.

The standard and Green versions of Envoy-CE4 and Envoy-CE2 are rated for industrial temperature range (-40 C to +85 C).
