PARIS -- Thomson (Euronext 18453; NYSE; TMS) today announced it has been chosen by SiOL.net, a subsidiary of the national operator Telekom Slovenije, for the deployment of its Cirpack softswitches to support the delivery of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to its customers throughout the country. The deployment of this software-based call processing solution by SiOL confirms Thomson’s Two-Year Plan ambitions to enhance its offering in the telecoms arena.

Thomson Technology Behind Transition to Triple Play Infrastructure

Spurred by major economic growth and membership of an enlarged European Union, many Central and Eastern European countries are currently undergoing a period of intense telecom infrastructure modernisation. One of the largest Internet Service Providers in Central and Eastern Europe, SiOL has entrusted the design and integration of its voice switching platform to Thomson and IBM in support of its strategy to likewise move seamlessly and rapidly onto the triple play market.

As part of a national telecoms operator, SiOL has strategically chosen to work with companies that can assure high quality, reliable, IP Multimedia Systems. Cirpack’s softswitch enables SiOL to deliver all the phone services people have come to expect from an incumbent operator and give them a competitive advantage in the ISP market - by supporting the development of the new triple play services including feature-rich VoIP services but with significantly lower investment and operational overheads.

SiOL’s CEO Tomaz Berginc explained “SiOL was the first in its region to introduce Triple Play services. The Next Generation Network solutions deployed by SiOL in cooperation with Thomson and IBM allow us to offer our users more flexible, cheaper and integrated broadband capabilities including IP telephony and television. We chose Thomson’s Cirpack platform as it includes the option of further development and upgrading, especially in terms of greater content for users. Thanks to Cirpack and IBM we now have lower costs in terms of system administration and maintenance which means that we can offer more services, on more favourable terms.”
