WASHINGTON -- Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc., a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI - News), has been awarded a contract under the U.S. Government's Defense Switched Systems Modernization Program (DSSMP). In a turnkey project, Siemens will install a communications system at Ft. Knox, Ky., that will enable the military post to take advantage of the latest telecommunications services and help provide the ability to migrate to a next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) network without having to retire equipment. The system is expected to be in operation by spring 2003. The system design includes a host EWSD digital central office, two remote control units (RCUs), a HiPath IP convergence platform with call center functionality, and an Accession broadband platform with more than 10,000 ports. The multimillion-dollar award is the first Siemens EWSD switch order for a U.S. military installation in the United States. "We believe this win demonstrates the U.S. Army's confidence in Siemens and its communications solutions," said George Nolen, president and CEO of Siemens Information and Communication Networks. "This solution should help the U.S. Army to support total battlefield dominance through effective knowledge management via a world-class converged multimedia network."
