BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Photon Kinetics (PK), the preeminent supplier of testing solutions optical fiber and cable manufacturers, announced today that it has started shipping the industry’s first multimode fiber bandwidth measurement system capable of measuring fiber lengths in excess of 17.6 km. The 2500 Optical Fiber Analysis System, equipped with the new Ultra Long Fiber Bandwidth (ULBW) Option, shatters the 8.8 km measurement barrier that has existed for almost 10 years and provides multimode fiber manufacturers with the highest performance bandwidth measurement capability at both 850 and 1300 nm that is fully compliant with all applicable international standards.

“Since the start of large-scale multimode fiber production, the longest length of fiber that a manufacturer could ship has been limited by the measurement range of their test instruments”, said Warren Hill, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Instrument limitations have forced them into the counterproductive practice of cutting the long fibers that are often produced by the fiber draw process into pieces less than 8.8 km in length just so they can be measured. The ULBW measurement option will enable fiber manufacturers to keep these long fiber lengths intact. This will not only help to reduce the total number of fiber spools fiber manufacturers need to process and inventory, but it will also enable them to offer the ultra long fiber lengths that their customers (optical fiber cablers) need to improve the efficiency of their manufacturing processes.”

Hill added, “This new bandwidth measurement option compliments our recently announced Single-mode Launch Differential Mode Delay (SML DMD) option for the 2500, which offers the industry’s most complete and longest range DMD measurement solution for “10 Gigabit” multimode fibers. With the ULBW and SML DMD options, multimode fiber manufacturers will have the critical measurement capability they need to produce both conventional and next generation multimode fibers in the most cost effective manner possible.”
