Lucent Develops Organic Laser

Less expensive organic materials could radically reduce the cost of lasers and lead to more widespread applications

MURRAY HILL, N.J.-- Physicists at Bell Labs, the research anddevelopment arm of Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU), have developed the first electricallypowered organic laser, a breakthrough that maylead to more widespread use of lasers in variousapplications. The organic laser, described in today's issue ofScience, could be less expensive to manufacturethan today's conventional inorganicsemiconductor lasers.

"These research results open up a whole new setof possibilities for electrically driven lasers," saidFederico Capasso, physical research vicepresident at Bell Labs. "They not only would beinexpensive to manufacture, but they could betailor made to produce a wide range ofwavelengths, each of which could have specificapplications."
