Europe iPhones It In

5:30 PM -- Evidently the lure of the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone wasn't quite as strong in the U.K. as it was when the device launched in the U.S. back in June. The Beeb reports that some 300 people were queuing at an Apple store in London for a first shot at the phone this morning, in contrast to lines 'round the block when the device launched with AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) this summer. (See The iPhone Arrives.)

Nonetheless, the launch for Telefónica UK Ltd. did see some ardent iPhonistas lining up in the cold. They will pay $566 for an 8GB model; the equivalent gadget in the U.S. costs $399.

The iPhone's costly Euro appeal has even seen some attempting to sell unlocked phones -- presumably sourced from the U.S. -- or Chinese replicas on EBay. Like its American cousin, the U.K. iPhone is supposed to remain locked to the service provider's network, a change from the norm in Merry Olde, where many buy unlocked devices and prepaid services.

re: Europe iPhones It In Approx. 500 iPhones are reported to have changed into the hands of their new owners in a launch event in the night from Thursday the 8th to Friday 9th at midnight in an T-Mobile Outlet in Cologne, Germany.

The crowd was reported to have been approx 300-400 folks, of which some stated to have been traveling several hundred miles to have one of the first devices - plus a lot of press was around. The event was briefly seen on many of the national news - certainly a welcomed free promo effect for T-Mobile.

The devices costs EUR 399 with a 24 month plan of at least EUR 49 per month, which includes certain amount of minutes and SMS and entitles to use all T-Mobile Hotspots in Germany.

As T-Mobile has the only EDGE network in Germany anyone who unlocks his iPhone will be facing a rather limited internet and visual voice mail experience unless he reduces talk/surf time to 3.5 hours when running it under permanant WiFI OR unless he uses a NON iPhone T-Mobile SIM...
