Alcatel, KDDI Demo Data-to-Optical

PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the worldleader in optical networking, today announced it has successfully completed with KDDI Corporation - one of Japan’s largest telecommunications carriers - a data-to-optical network interoperability trial using the OIF User Network Interface (OIF-UNI) protocol. OIF UNI is a precursor of GMPLS protocols that contributes to add intelligence to the Optical IP network.This interoperability will enable operators to reduce the investments required for building a transmission infrastructure and to reduce the operational expenses by about 25%.In KDDI’s premises, the trial - featuring Alcatel’s 10Gbit/s system(Alcatel 1670 SM) interconnected with gigarouters - successfullydemonstrated bandwidth-on-demand capabilities, routing traffic over anoptical network. This ability alleviates possible bottlenecks related tohigh information loads transported over network infrastructures, whileempowering them to handle highly dynamic bandwidth applications.
