PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the worldleader in optical networking, today announced it has successfully completed with KDDI Corporation - one of Japan’s largest telecommunications carriers - a data-to-optical network interoperability trial using the OIF User Network Interface (OIF-UNI) protocol. OIF UNI is a precursor of GMPLS protocols that contributes to add intelligence to the Optical IP network. This interoperability will enable operators to reduce the investments required for building a transmission infrastructure and to reduce the operational expenses by about 25%.In KDDI’s premises, the trial - featuring Alcatel’s 10Gbit/s system(Alcatel 1670 SM) interconnected with gigarouters - successfullydemonstrated bandwidth-on-demand capabilities, routing traffic over anoptical network. This ability alleviates possible bottlenecks related tohigh information loads transported over network infrastructures, whileempowering them to handle highly dynamic bandwidth applications. For thetrial, Alcatel also supplied its integrated intelligent network managementplatform to test scalable and fast fault protection and restorationmechanisms."Today optimizing bandwidth is key to enhance network utilization andenable operators to offer business and private end-users a faster and moreconvenient network access to next generation services" stated Jean-MarieVansteenkiste, President of Alcatel’s terrestrial networks activities."This demonstration further consolidates Alcatel’s leading role in thefield of the industry’s emerging standards and in providing new foundationsfor networks’ evolution".Alcatel SAKDDI Corp.
