HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading provider of network access equipment, today announced the NetVanta 5000 Series of access routers. At less than half the price of comparable solutions, these products make higher bandwidth applications, including high-capacity Internet access, corporate Frame Relay, point-to-point connectivity, and Virtual Private Networking (VPN), more affordable for small- and medium-sized businesses.

The NetVanta 5305, the first member of the series, is a 3U-high, modular access router supporting up to two unchannelized DS3s, making the device perfect for high-bandwidth applications. The NetVanta 5305 is ideal for small- to medium-sized businesses needing a larger-capacity router to simultaneously support corporate Frame Relay connectivity and secure Internet access from a single platform. In addition, it has two auto-sensing 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN ports for LAN segmentation or DMZ applications and an optional redundant AC power supply to guarantee availability. Users can also add optional VPN capability. This option enables the NetVanta 5305 to provide up to 2,000 IP-Sec tunnels supporting DES, 3DES, or AES encryption and enhanced integration with other VPN-equipped NetVanta devices and the NetVanta VPN software client.

“The NetVanta 5000 Series is the result of requests from resellers, end-users, and system integrators, all with a need for a cost-effective solution for higher bandwidth applications, “said Tim Saunders, vice president of product management, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division. “This product incorporates the features of ADTRAN’s most popular access router, the NetVanta 3200, and adds the capability for larger bandwidth and advanced VPN functionality, all at a price customers can afford.”

The NetVanta 5000 Series, like all NetVanta routers, switches, and VPN/firewall products, is based on the ADTRAN Operating System (OS). The ADTRAN OS provides a stateful inspection firewall; Quality of Service (QoS) via Priority Queuing, DiffServ marking and packet recognition for delay-sensitive traffic like Voice over IP (VoIP); VLAN Trunking (802.1Q) for routing between VLANs; Network Address Translation (NAT) for the concealment of private IP addresses; and optional VPN for secure corporate connectivity across the Internet. In addition, the NetVanta 5305 supports fast and accurate network convergence using routing protocols such as OSPF and RIP, and termination of Frame Relay and PPP WAN protocols.

The ADTRAN OS offers a user-familiar Command Line Interface (CLI) that mimics the industry de facto standard, therefore requiring little or no retraining and no costly industry certification. The CLI benefits the customer by allowing configuration scripts to be used, saved, and downloaded for a quick and easy recovery mechanism. All NetVanta products share the same CLI, allowing for ease of management and script sharing.

In addition to ADTRAN's domestic five-year warranty and free technical support, free firmware releases are available for remote software updates via the ADTRAN website (www.adtran.com). For added value, ADTRAN Custom Extended Service (ACES) programs are also available, offering guaranteed response times from four-hours to next business day, on-site and remote installation services, maintenance support, and depot sparing.

Currently available, the NetVanta 5305 Chassis has a U.S. list price of $6,995, while the T3 Module lists for $1,895. A VPN upgrade and a redundant power option are also available at $1,395 and $695 respectively (U.S. list). An Octal T1 Module, and High Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) Module are scheduled for release in the latter half of the third quarter. Three product bundles are also currently available:

  • NetVanta 5305 with VPN $8,390 (list)

  • NetVanta 5305 with T3 Module $8,890 (list)

  • NetVanta 5305 with T3 and VPN $10,285 (list)
