REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- According to Dell'Oro Group, Gigabit Ethernet port shipments grew almost 40% during 3Q03, with Gigabit-Ethernet-over-Copper accounting for all of this increase. Port shipments in this segment grew sequentially by almost one million ports, as vendors introduced high-density low-priced switches designed for networking desktop PCs.

Despite the impressive increase in Gigabit Ethernet port shipments during 3Q03, Fast Ethernet port shipments also saw strong quarter-over-quarter growth. "Although we are starting to see a ramp in Gigabit Ethernet switches targeted for desktop connectivity, businesses continue to upgrade to more intelligent Fast Ethernet switches in anticipation of Voice-over-IP (VoIP), security and wireless LAN applications," said Seamus Crehan, a Senior Analyst at Dell'Oro Group.
