NEPTUNE, N.J. -- Controlware can reduce the number of fiber optic connections required in ESCON (Enterprise Connectivity) environments using WDM (Wave Division Multiplexing), DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) or TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) technology. Multiple ESCON (200 Mb/s) applications are able to share the same fiber or fiber pair, saving further financial outlay on existing and additional fiber optic connectivity. This presents a significant opportunity for Enterprise ESCON users to deploy a flexible future proofed solution that will reduce fiber count and save money. For carriers offering managed Enterprise services, this solution provides the ability to increase control over dark fiber resources and the opportunity to extract new revenues from fiber optic networks with the prospect of a quick return on initial investments. Controlware WDM, DWDM and TDM platforms enhance extended storage environments, removing unnecessary complexity and financial outlay while increasing reliability and manageability of physical fiber connections. Multiple applications are able to share the same physical fiber path, while transparency through bit rate and protocol independence enables transportation of a wide range of applications including ESCON, FICON, Fiber Channel, Ethernet, ATM and FDDI. Additional levels of resilience can also be added to physical storage environments through electrical or optical back up switching to a redundant fiber route, and an upgrade path from ESCON to FICON (Fiber Connectivity) can be accommodated in the same solution. Given the high costs and long time delays associated with fiber connectivity, it makes a great deal of sense to maximize physical fiber investment and to add further resilience and management capabilities to existing ESCON installations. The introduction of Controlware products to the extended storage environment as a managed service or via direct installation by the enterprise user provides a resilient platform for future growth and support for the scalable development of disaster recovery needs in the future.
