Cogent Lights Up Optical Network

WASHINGTON, D.C. -– Cogent Communications, Inc., a next-generation Internet Service Provider (ISP), today announced it has activated the first phase of its all-optical facilities-based network. Metropolitan fiber rings in four cities as well as the national backbone that connects all major U.S. urban centers have been ‘lighted.’ The initial light up of the ‘Eastern Ring’ network includes New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Cogent is currently equipping millions of square feet of multi-tenant commercial properties in major metropolises with all-optical, non-oversubscribed 100 Mbps Internet access capability to be sold at a market-leading price point of $1000 per month. Activation enables Cogent to meet the pent-up demand for affordable ultra-high bandwidth data connectivity for the thousands of enterprises located in buildings on the Cogent network.

“The ever-increasing volume and complexity of our data transmissions, plus our plans to engage in webcasting, will stretch our current T1 service beyond its limits,” said Jim Linn, information technology director at the American Gas Association. “That’s why we were one of the first customers in the D.C. area to sign up for Cogent’s service. It’s a solution that offers us close to 100 times the bandwidth at about two-thirds the cost of our existing service.”
