SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Calient Networks, a leader in intelligent, all-photonic switching systems and software, announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Kionix, Inc., a leader in MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) fabrication processes. On October 10, 2000, Calient announced a definitive agreement to acquire Kionix, a private company based in Ithaca, New York.

“The acquisition was undertaken to assure full access to highest-quality MEMS production as demand for these leading-edge components in the optical network industry continues to rise,” stated Charles Corbalis, CEO, president and co-founder of Calient Networks. Greg Galvin, president and founder of Kionix, has been named president and CEO of Calient Optical Components, as the new operating subsidiary will now be known.

Calient Optical Components will leverage its deep expertise in single crystal silicon MEMS design and production processes in conjunction with Calient’s world-class Photonics Design Center in Santa Barbara, California. The combined operations of Calient now include over 250 personnel at three development and production facilities in California and New York. Kionix non-optical MEMS product lines have been spun off into a separate company to be known as Cayuga Sensors, Inc.
