Netflix Throttles Video Streaming Settings

Streaming video moves lead today's cable news roundup.

  • To help subs avoid breaking bandwidth caps imposed by broadband ISPs, Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) is letting U.S. customers adjust their bit rate and video streaming quality settings -- something it's already doing in Canada.   • Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) and Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA) are attempting to settle their dispute over rights to distribute live programming to Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPad, filing a "standstill" agreement with a New York court that puts the case on hold. (See TW Cable, Viacom Take iPad Fight to Court .)

  • Cox Communications Inc. says a big drop in wholesale wireless prices also factored heavily into its decision to halt the buildout of its own 3G network. (See Cox: We're Not Selling Our Spectrum and Cox May Tear Down Wireless Network.)

  • The bidding for Insight Communications Co. Inc. has been narrowed down to Mediacom Communications Corp. , Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) and WideOpenWest Holdings LLC (WOW) , reports Multichannel News. (See Who Will Bid for Insight Communications? )

  • Congress may fast track the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) 's auction of 120 MHz of "underutilized" broadcast TV spectrum. TV stations could lose the spectrum to wireless broadband services as soon as this summer. (See FCC Chair Goes to Bat for Spectrum Auctions.)

  • ExpandTV has replaced SelectTV as the brand name for cable interactive services and apps enabled by Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF). (See Cable Picks 'SelecTV' as ITV Brand.)

  • Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) plans to resume the rollout of its latest FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide, and could have it deployed across the board within a few months.     Guess I don't use Netflix or other streaming services and apps enough to worry about tweaking my bit rates manually... According to the Comcast meter, I gobbled up 80GB last month and so far just 49GB this month -- still well below the 250GB threshold and at no risk of being throw in the penalty box. JB
