LISBON -- Portugal Telecom, one of Europe’s leading FTTH operators, and Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, have jointly completed the first 10G-GPON trial in Europe by demonstrating IPTV Meo service and 3DTV using the new 10G-PON system (MA 5600T platform) provided by Huawei.

The standardized 10G-PON system provided by Huawei can achieve 10Gb/s downstream bandwidth and 2.5Gb/s upstream bandwidth for future high bandwidth demanding video services, such as 3DTV. The demonstration, which in the near future will be made available to end users, shows the evolutionary capabilities of the complete network solution that Portugal Telecom is implementing in Portugal to support its Meo service.

Portugal Telecom is building one of Europe’s largest GPON FTTH networks, covering more than 1 million households and successfully serving a continuously growing customer base. As the leading and most innovative operator in Portugal, “Portugal Telecom is driving and leading services and technology innovation on its network by strongly investing in fiber-to-the-home using GPON technology, therefore enabling its customers to benefit from the highest quality of service,” said Alfredo Baptista, CTO of Portugal Telecom.
