GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Since October ‘09, the inhabitants of Gelsenkirchen’s residential area Wohnen am Bachlauf have access to a triple-play offer that includes an ultrafast Internet connection of 100 Mbps in the downstream and up to 10 Mbps in the upstream, full-featured analog and digital telephony services, TV, and flat-rates for Internet and telephony.

The new optical network - one of the first next-generation access networks in the Ruhr area - is based on GPON technology from Alcatel-Lucent, and will be used by Gelsen-Net to provide fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) connectivity. Alcatel-Lucent delivered the full range of network components, from the central office equipment up to the optical modems that are installed at the end-users’ premises. Additionally, Alcatel-Lucent managed network installation and integration, and will also support the network’s maintenance.

“The Ruhr area has one of the highest population densities in Europe. Next-generation access networks are particularly effective in such settings, and so the Gelsen-Net GPON network is a lighthouse project for the region as a whole. Gelsen-Net is performing first-class pioneering work to enhance the attractiveness of the new housing estate,” remarked Jürgen Katzer, Vice-President Sales and Carrier Account Manager of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany.
