Avanex Gets DWDM Patent

FREMONT, Calif. -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX), the global providerof photonic processors that enable next generation performance for optical communications networks, today announced that ithas been issued a U.S. patent for its proprietary dense wavelength multiplexing (DWDM) process. Dr. Simon Cao, Chief TechnologyOfficer for the company, is the inventor on the patent. Patent # 6,130,971 “Fiber Optic Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexerwith a Phase Differential Method of Wavelength Separation Utilizing a Polarization Beam Splitter and a Nonlinear Interferometer”was issued to Avanex by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 10.

“This is a highly significant patent for Avanex,” company Chairman andCEO Walter Alessandrini said. “The process invented by Dr. Simon Cao is a key enabling technology in Avanex’s revolutionary photonicprocessing solutions. Award of the patent illustrates the unique nature of Avanex’s approach, protects valuable intellectualproperty and establishes a formidable competitive barrier.” Dr. Cao now holds five U.S. patents, with 33 more pending.
