BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Network Elements Inc., a developer of plug-and-play network infrastructure building blocks, has announced SmartModule, the industry's first family of highly-integrated 10Gb/s optical networking modules for 10 Gigabit Ethernet equipment, IP switch equipment, SONET/SDH and DWDM termination equipment. These products provide optical-electrical-optical conversion, clock/data recovery, transmit clock frequency multiplication, de-serialization and serialization in a module size of 2.5x3.5x0.5 inches -- a reduction of over 70 percent in size and power compared to board-level solutions. Network Elements' product strategy is to enable new classes of optical networking equipment by incorporating Optical Network Modules with standardized optical interfaces and multi-protocol support.

"Equipment vendors are looking for every competitive advantage that will provide early access to leading edge networking technology and reduce time-to-market," said Bruce Murdock, CEO of Network Elements. "By integrating multiple technologies at 10 Gb/s into a fully tested module, we are dramatically changing the way network equipment is built and deployed. We're leveraging our core competencies in ASIC design and optical, electrical and software engineering to enable new-generation networks at the enterprise, edge and core with this flexible and scalable modular approach."
