NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Telecom service providers can now leverage existing infrastructure to deliver Ethernet and virtual private network services with new Ethernet aggregation capabilities on the Tellabs 5500 digital cross-connect. These new capabilities reduce Ethernet service delivery costs by enabling providers to aggregate hundreds of Ethernet streams into a single Gigabit Ethernet (Gig-E) interface, enabling the delivery of Ethernet services over existing synchronous optical network (SONET) and time division multiplex (TDM) networks.

Service delivery costs can be reduced by as much as 80% when the Tellabs 5500 system's Ethernet aggregation capabilities are used in conjunction with the new Tellabs(R) 8815 multi-service access node. The Tellabs 8815 node helps providers increase revenue by offering high-demand Ethernet services over existing SONET, synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH), TDM and hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks without costly network overlays.

"As our customers offer Ethernet services, they are looking at ways to extend these services to small- and medium-sized businesses," said Anders Gustafsson, senior executive vice president, global business operations, Tellabs. "With the Tellabs 5500 system's new Ethernet aggregation capabilities, our customers can leverage their existing infrastructure to provide Ethernet services to locations where they provide TDM and frame relay services today."
