LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- RED-C, a maker of a comprehensive line of optical amplifiers, reported today the commencement of commercial deployment of its Sentior 9000, the first commercial Raman Amplifier with a comprehensive eye-safety solution.

The Sentior 9000 has been deployed as a pre-amp for RED-C’s variable-gain EDFA, the Sentior 7550, allowing the customer to have substantially longer spans wherever geographic conditions, economic efficiencies or network topology do not allow standard-length spans.

The combination of RED-C’s Raman amplifier with its Variable-Gain EDFA materially improves system OSNR, enabling larger spans and fewer nodes and thus substantially improving network performance and reducing both network’s CapEx and OpEx. These advantages are especially emphasized in extreme network topologies, such as island hoping and in places where infrastructure is sparse or inaccessible.

The Sentior 9000 incorporates a unique Eye Safety protection mechanism, designed purposely to eliminate the typical risks associated with the Raman Amplifier’s high-energy pumping into the transmission fiber. It includes both co-propagating and counter propagating solutions. Eye-safety mechanism shuts-down amplifier in case of fiber cut, including situation where the cut occurs at far distance from the amplifier.
