Pirelli Scores in Romania

MILAN -- Pirelli Telecom Cables and Systems today announced that it has been chosen by Compania Nationala de Transport al Energiei Electrice Transelectrica - the national power utility of Romania - to supply a 2,800 km OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) telecommunication system on the country s main electrical transmission network.The overall contract, worth 32 million Euro (including installation activities), strengthens Pirelli s position as the world leader in OPGW technology. The OPGW cable performs a dual role. It protects the electrical network from fault current and lightning damage in the same manner as a conventional earth wire whilst the inclusion of optical fibres - completely unaffected by the electrical environment - within the cable, provides a telecommunication system capable of transmitting high speed voice, data and video traffic. We are also very pleased that a project of this magnitude is underway in a country where Pirelli has a major local presence."Under the terms of the contract, Pirelli will supply Translectrica with 2,800 kilometers of OPGW cable containing Non-Zero Dispersion (NZD) fibre - also produced by Pirelli - which will be installed on their 220/400kV transmission line network. All cables will be produced at Pirelli s specialist OPGW facility in Vilanova i la Geltru (Spain) and engineering services including installation and the supply of fittings will be performed by Spanish contractor Inabensa.Pirelli Cables and Systems
