MURRAY HILL, N.J., AND NEW YORK - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Winstar Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WCII) is using Lucent's 80-channel optical networking system to dramatically increase the capacity on the New York to Washington, D.C., leg of Winstar's national broadband network. Winstar is the first company in North America to announce it has live network traffic running across Lucent's flagship system.

Winstar is using the system - known as the WaveStar™ OLS 400G - to transmit voice and data traffic over a two-fiber network ring connecting the two cities. With a per-fiber capacity of up to 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s), the WaveStar OLS 400G is capable of transmitting either five million simultaneous phone calls or 12,000 encyclopedia volumes per second.
