MADRID -- Huawei recently announced that it has won the bid for Telefonica’s session border controller (SBC) project in Spain. The contract will see Huawei deliver SBCs for Telefonica in Spain over the next two years, providing hundreds of thousands of users with access to voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE), Rich Communication Suite (RCS), and voice over broadband (VoBB) services.

As the largest fixed-line and mobile carrier in Spain, Telefonica is rapidly evolving from traditional telecommunications to converged communications. A key component of this was adapting to the rapid growth of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and VoLTE users. Desperately in need of a flexible SBC network in terms of technologies and services, Telefonica invited a tender from industry-leading manufacturers to choose the best manufacturer and solution in March 2015.

Telefonica awarded the project to Huawei on the latter’s SE2900 "All-In-One" solution, which supports not only diverse access modes (such as FTTH/RCS/VoLTE access) but also network interworking. In addition to meeting service requirements, Huawei SE2900 supports smooth evolution to Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), laying a solid foundation for upcoming cloud migration.
