NEW YORK -– The onslaught of new "compliance" laws and regulations has put storage professionals under intense pressure, but it is also a great chance for companies to rework their operational processes and improve efficiency, says a new report from the subscription research service Byte and Switch Insider (www.byteandswitch.com/insider).

Entitled "Compliance: Do No Evil," the report focuses on the implications of compliance for IT and storage managers and provides valuable information about the compliance landscape combined with analysis of the vendors and offerings designed to help enterprises achieve compliance.

"You can approach compliance as a way to improve company performance and bring in new policies and procedures that were needed anyway," says the author of the report, Graeme Thickins. "It's part of the broader 'information lifecycle management' strategy and a step toward automated, policy-based management – the ultimate storage vision."

Thickins is a storage and IT industry veteran who writes on storage networking, utility computing, and other IT trends.

Among the report's key findings:

  • At least $5 billion will be spent on compliance in 2004 alone – and that's just the beginning.

  • Organizations will spend an average of 6,000 person-hours during 2004 to comply just with Section 204 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, say analysts.

  • IT and storage professionals are not alone: The compliance team is a multidisciplinary effort.

  • People and process is where it all begins: Develop a sound compliance program before buying products.

  • Two-thirds of corporations expect to be able to deal with compliance using systems they already have.

  • Email and instant messaging are pain points that many firms have to deal with right away.

  • The report identifies approximately 60 vendors with compliance-related products and services.
