LOS ANGELES -- EdgeCast Networks, the superior, cost-effective rich media content delivery network (CDN), today announced several enhancements to its streaming platform including new security features, European live stream publishing points, customized Silverlight players, and improved analytics.

The company has successfully deployed live streaming in production for both Flash and Windows Media. This complements their successful launch in August of their on-demand Flash and Windows streaming services. The company beefed up its already robust streaming capabilities by deploying additional streaming capacity, and:

  • Supporting both live and on-demand streaming for Flash and Windows

  • Upgrading all 13 locations with additional capacity to ensure powerful global delivery of customer content

  • Adding new live stream publishing points in Europe to enable extra redundancy for the capture of live feeds. Also, new streaming security features were added to the platform, including:

  • Token based authentication for streaming and http progressive download (supporting both live and on-demand services)

  • Ability to block access to content via hot-linking via use of TTLs and Referrer URLs. This protects media assets from misuse by unauthorized third-party websites.

  • Geo-Blocking - the ability to restrict access to content per country or region of the world.

  • IP Blocking - the ability to restrict access to content via IP address or block

EdgeCast's industry-leading analytics suite now includes an up-to-the-minute statistical view that gives immediate insight into how many viewers are watching each stream, enabling immediate feedback on content popularity. EdgeCast customers can view this data through the EdgeCast reporting interface or feed it into their own reports/intranet via XML API.

"After successfully taking our Live Streaming offerings out of beta last quarter, we've responded to customer feedback and incorporated several important new features," said James Segil, president of EdgeCast Networks. "Many of our media customers wanted better visibility into their audience usage, and we've delivered that with these new analytics improvements. Additionally, licensing and syndication agreements require many of our customers to exert finer control over who could watch what, when, and where. All these new features will make streaming a more transparent, secure and profitable endeavor."
