CHICAGO -- FTTP market leader Optical Solutions Inc. today announced the first shipment of its enhanced GPON platform – the FiberPath 590 OLT+ -- to Silver Star Communications of Freedom, Wyo. Silver Star will serve both existing copper-based customers and two new FTTP subdivisions in Star Valley using the industry’s first GPON optical line terminal (OLT) with integrated remote transport and support for legacy systems and services.

The new FiberPath® 590 OLT+ platform, unveiled earlier this year, enables carriers to migrate their legacy networks directly to an all-fiber, all-IP GPON network in all applications. Service providers planning BPON deployments and subsequent upgrades to GPON get the benefit of immediate migration to GPON – saving them millions in upgrade expense.

For Silver Star Communications, a progressive independent carrier serving the “gateway” communities of the Grand Tetons mountain range, the FiberPath 590 OLT + provides a convenient and cost-effective solution for serving new and existing customers at the network edge. Silver Star plans to deliver voice, high-speed data and IPTV services to as many as 1,500 residents by the end of the year.

“The combined FTTP and legacy capabilities of Optical Solutions’ new OLT allow us to prepare for the future by growing our network while also maximizing our existing plant,” said Silver Star President Allen Hoopes. “We were already familiar with OSI’s tried-and-true reputation, so when this new system came along, we knew it was time to act.”

The FiberPath 590 OLT+ is Optical Solutions’ first environmentally hardened platform with integrated transport for remote applications. Carriers can install a 590 OLT+ up to 52 miles from the central office, enabling significant reach for delivery of IP triple-play services to rural and remote developments or to support CLEC expansions into underserved areas. At the same time, the 590 OLT+ offers carriers the flexibility of tapping the system’s full range of copper and fiber line cards for supporting legacy systems and services.
