SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR - News) has delivered a scalable network based on its innovative BlackDiamond® 10K core switch and the new Extreme Aspen 8800 modular switches to Agere Systems, a global leader in semiconductors for storage, wireless data and enterprise networks. Agere is outfitting its corporate headquarters with an advanced network infrastructure that delivers improved availability and resiliency for its business applications.

Agere, based in Allentown, Pa., chose an upgrade to 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology to serve as the network foundation supporting the ongoing development of leading-edge silicon chips and software that power a broad range of computing and communications applications. Agere's data servers commonly are equipped with gigabit Ethernet connections, and a network upgrade to 10 Gigabit became appropriate to support database applications that deliver real time data for manufacturing, inventory assessment and HR activities.

To gain added scalability with higher availability, Agere selected Extreme Networks' BlackDiamond® 10K core switches and the recently introduced Extreme Aspen 8800 modular switches. These 10 Gigabit platforms connect Agere's two corporate data centers via core and intercampus networks, which enable Agere to achieve added capabilities such as a disaster recovery feature to their infrastructure.

The speed of the new network reduces file backup and archiving times, thus creating a more flexible and responsive IT infrastructure. Additionally, Extreme Networks' modular operating system, ExtremeWare® XOS, allows Agere to remove the need for scheduled switch downtime. This is enabled by the switch's ability to be updated with new code and feature enhancements without being taken out of service.

"Our IT systems have been built from the ground-up to optimize Agere's customer service," said Chuck Sperazza, vice president and chief information officer for Agere Systems. "This network upgrade gives us a significant boost to our network performance that will enhance our ability to serve our customers through faster and more secure transactions. Now we have the best combination of performance, availability and resiliency in a simple-to-manage portfolio that will meet our needs for years to come."
