The CDMA iPhone: What We Don't Know Yet
3:15 PM When will LTE arrive, how much will data plans cost and other unanswered questions
3:15 PM -- The Verizon Wireless CDMA iPhone 4 launch was more strange and entertaining than you might expect from a tech press conference on a freezing cold Midtown morning in January.
Even before the announcement got underway, Daily Show "correspondent" John Oliver, had jumped out of his seat in the Frederick P. Rose Hall to scream, "F*** yeah!" not once but twice. I'm guessing this will be cut into footage of the actual unveiling itself tonight for maximum hilarity.
As I was rushing to leave the Lincoln Center* and post a story, meanwhile, a couple of people approached me to ask: "Didya see it, man?" Like the iPhone was some kind of mystical talisman rather than the latest twist on the 3G smart phone from Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)
But in truth there are still a few mystical elements to the CDMA launch that have yet to be revealed. Let's run them down, shall we?
Why no 3G CDMA iPad?
When might an LTE iPhone arrive? (I'll have more thoughts on this later.)
How was the iPhone 4 antenna tweaked for the CDMA version and will that solve the "death grip" problems?
How much will Verizon charge for the new "mobile hotspot" function included with the phone?
Data pricing in general is still a bit of mystery in general: Verizon executives didn't give any details away at the launch, promising more announcements soon. [Ed note: Be still, my beating heart!] The Wall Street Journal has, however, reported that the phone will be offered with unlimited data plans.

*"The Home of Jazz" apparently, at least if you're fan of Wynton Marsalis and the push toward musical taxidermy in this genre.
