Level 3 Communications' Chief Security Officer Dale Drew says service providers, manufacturers and even consumers must combine to halt massive DDoS attacks using IoT devices in botnets. The solution he has in mind includes reputation-based routing by the service provider but also more secure endpoint devices and greater consumer awareness.

Re: Security solutions
And not only getting the manufacturers aboard about improve consumer awareness will no doubt prove to be a great preventive factor in alleviating and preventing large scale attacks. Once consumers start taking notice and securing their devices and putting public awareness back to the manufacturers to build in better security, things should gradually improve for the years ahead when the expansion of IoT devices will be greatly more in use everywhere.

Deja vu
Drew's discussion of reputation-based routing remind me of some of the discussion we saw about spam ca. 2003, when spam started taking off. At that time, there were a number of proposals floated for trusted email sender programs.

Makes sense that there should be parallels -- spam is a kind of DOS attack.

As for securing the IoT: Industry pressure is necessary but not sufficient. Naming and shaming won't get vendors and operators to secure their products and networks. That requires laws and regulations.

Security solutions
Makes sense to try and get manufacturers to build-in security on the front-end w/IoT devices. The recent DDoS attack that used IoT devices was also mentioned in this video...Gary Sockrider w/Arbor Networks touched on that during the Upskill U course Security: Tackling DDoS

Live Digital Audio

A CSP's digital transformation involves so much more than technology. Crucial – and often most challenging – is the cultural transformation that goes along with it. As Sigma's Chief Technology Officer, Catherine Michel has extensive experience with technology as she leads the company's entire product portfolio and strategy. But she's also no stranger to merging technology and culture, having taken a company — Tribold — from inception to acquisition (by Sigma in 2013), and she continues to advise service providers on how to drive their own transformations. This impressive female leader and vocal advocate for other women in the industry will join Women in Comms for a live radio show to discuss all things digital transformation, including the cultural transformation that goes along with it.
