BURLINGTON, Mass. -- Legra Systems, innovators in wireless LAN (WLAN) switching solutions, announces general availability of the Legra product suite. Legra is the first company to develop a Parallel Priority Cryptography™ (PPC) chip, the CryptoFlex™, which enables customers to break through the WLAN security bottleneck by performing encryption/decryption on four traffic streams simultaneously. Built to stringent enterprise requirements, the Legra solution brings ease of use, priority-based security and high performance to wireless networks.

The Legra solution boasts many industry firsts in addition to the CryptoFlex™ chip including: the first wireless network processor, the first wireless switch application engine (TrueApp™) , the first extensible Linux-based wireless operating system (WOS™) and the first routable RemoteRadio™ protocol. Legra’s WLAN solution is the first to combine priority switching and priority cryptography in a single system. This powerful combination provides enterprise network managers with the performance and security to successfully extend enterprise applications to the wireless network.

“Legra’s third-generation WLAN solution has broken through several barriers simultaneously,” said Craig Mathias, a Principal with wireless advisory firm Farpoint Group. “High performance, flexible security, fault tolerance, appliance-based management, and extensibility combine in an architecture and product line that’s going to attract a lot of attention.”

“Enterprise IT departments are increasingly pressured to transition from wired to wireless technology. But with security threats on the rise, and unyielding reliability and performance requirements, we cannot possibly work with first generation solutions,” said Eric Josephson, Director of Network and System Operations at Groove Networks. “IT managers are looking for enterprise-class solutions that meet the most stringent security and application performance requirements. Legra’s new products are built to support our application requirements, while meeting our performance, security and management needs.”

Designed for the dynamic networking environment where security and data standards continue to evolve and new processing intensive applications are being introduced, the Legra Switch centralizes all security, control and management functions on its unique Linux-based Wireless OS (WOS™). The platform features a unique, software upgradeable encryption engine, the Legra CryptoFlex™. The CryptoFlex supports multiple security suites at one time on a per user basis. The patented Parallel Priority Cryptography™ technology enables the CryptoFlex™ chip to provide cryptographic Quality of Service for applications such as Voice over IP and real time video.

The system’s extensible architecture and unique WOS™ simplifies software upgrades and provides support for evolving applications and new smart radio technology. Legra’s Wireless LAN Switch, the LS2012, incorporates the TrueApp Engine™, a dedicated application processor and embedded hard disk that gives IT managers a foundation on which to deliver new features and services like intrusion detection, location-based security or billing.

This combination of centralized management and security, blended with its robust processing power and a future-proof extensible architecture provides enterprise IT staff with the performance, flexibility and manageability required to easily and securely extend their wired network to the wireless domain.

The Legra product suite includes:

  • Legra Switch (LS2012): The LS2012 is a WLAN switch that works in concert with Legra Radios. The switch supports up to 12 direct radio and 60 remote radio connections. By performing all encryption, QoS, and traffic forwarding on the switch, rather than on Access Points (APs), the LS2012 provides a more secure alternative to traditional WLAN solutions. The LS2012 can be centrally located and communicates with locally and geographically distributed Legra Radios within the enterprise over an IP network.

  • Legra Radios (LR11b and LR54a/g): The LR Radio product line consists of two secure smart radios, which serve as the APs for the LS2012 WLAN Switch. The LR11b and LR54a/g Radios are designed to meet varying performance requirements, support all major 802.11 standards, and can easily be added anywhere in the enterprise without being directly connected to the switch.

  • Legra Manager (LM6000): The LM6000 is a network management appliance that provides end-to-end visibility into Legra-based networks, and minimizes operational complexity by providing centralized provisioning, troubleshooting and monitoring of Legra LS2012 WLAN Switches and LR Radios. The LM6000 is designed to easily integrate and work with existing enterprise management systems, such as HP OpenView and CA Unicenter.

  • Automatic Optimizer (LM-AO-SW): The Automatic Optimizer is a Legra Manager plug-in application that automates the process of radio channel selection. The Automatic Optimizer will scan the radio network looking for radio frequency interference and rogue access points. The application will analyze the resultant information, recommend radio channel assignment, and automatically configure Legra Radios.
