About eight years ago, Mark Desautels, the head of the wireless association, CTIA, asked me to provide some quips for a speech that included, “You know wireless data has made it when…” One suggestion he used was, “You know wireless data has made it when voice is an optional service.”

No more joking. Cellular operators offer data-only plans for BlackBerrys and other smartphones. AT&T Mobility began offering an unlimited data plan for prepaid customers, without requiring voice service...
