Euronews: ZTE Wins Euro DWDM Deal

ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763), Portugal Telecom SGPS SA (NYSE: PT) and Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) are amongst those caught in today's trawl through the EMEA telecom news headlines.

  • Chinese giant ZTE continues its push into Europe with the award of a contract to build a Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) metro network for Portugal Telecom, covering both the mainland of Portugal and its islands. All told, Portugal Telecom has 90 million users across 14 countries. (See Portugal Telecom Uses ZTE's DWDM, ZTE Profit Drops 12.4% in H1 and ZTE Profit Drops 12.4% in H1.)

  • Shares in Telefónica fell 0.8 percent this morning on the news that the Spain-based operator is to cut its dividend by 14 percent, reports Reuters. Some analysts, however, felt this still wasn't enough. (See Euronews: Layoff Costs Tear Into Telefonica's Q3 , Telefonica Holds Key to Digital Model and Telefonica Restructures, Creates New Units.)

  • The U.K.'s three largest mobile operators, namely EE , Vodafone UK and Telefónica UK Ltd. (O2), are holding "informal" talks with smaller rival Three UK about letting it join the mobile money platform project they have been cooking up together, according to the Financial Times (subscription required). 3 had been less than happy at being left out in the cold. (See UK Operators Form Mobile Money JV.)

  • A couple of sips of Orange now: In its native France, the mobile giant has teamed up with Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) to offer Orange TV on the Xbox 360 gaming console, while in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, Orange has chosen Tellabs Inc. (Nasdaq: TLAB; Frankfurt: BTLA)'s 8609 switch to meet its 3G backhaul needs. • Nordic mobile operator Telenor Group (Nasdaq: TELN) has chosen Mobilethink A.S. 's device management system (DMS) for its operations in Norway and Denmark. The two firms have been working together since 2004. (See Telenor Deploys Mobilethink's DMS, Swedish LTE Challengers Wield Unlimited Offers and LTE Showdown in Sweden .)

Assistant Editor, Europe, Light Reading

Paul is based on the Isle of Wight, a rocky outcrop off the English coast that is home only to a colony of technology journalists and several thousand puffins.

He has worked as a writer and copy editor since the age of William Caxton, covering the design industry, D-list celebs, tourism and much, much more.

During the noughties Paul took time out from his page proofs and marker pens to run a small hotel with his other half in the wilds of Exmoor. There he developed a range of skills including carrying cooked breakfasts, lying to unwanted guests and stopping leaks with old towels.

Now back, slightly befuddled, in the world of online journalism, Paul is thoroughly engaged with the modern world, regularly firing up his VHS video recorder and accidentally sending text messages to strangers using a chipped Nokia feature phone.
