PALO ALTO, Calif., December 9, 2014 —HP announced today new solution capabilities to help communications service providers (CSPs) adopt Networks Functions Virtualization (NFV) that reduce infrastructure and capital operational costs while providing a more agile network environment to innovate and rapidly deliver applications and services.

As part of the HP OpenNFV Program, HP brings together a variety of standards-based network virtualization technologies that replace proprietary network architectures with networking components that are not only less expensive, but can also be deployed in less time. The HP OpenNFV Program is a multi-vendor approach that allows HP and external partners, such as Network Equipment Providers and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), to take advantage of the open standards–based NFV reference architecture, HP OpenNFV Labs, and the HP OpenNFV partner ecosystem of applications and services.

CSPs are under increased pressure with straddling the dual concerns of exploding network traffic, while revenues are not similarly increasing. Enterprise information technology demonstrates a more efficient way to manage the delivery of multiple networked applications through shared virtualized infrastructure. NFV applies virtualization to the telecom core network functions, the associated core, and value-added applications enabling CSPs to reduce costs and improve time to market. HP is ideally positioned to help CSPs succeed in their NFV transformation by offering a comprehensive set of solutions addressing all aspects of NFV as part of its OpenNFV program. This includes the key ingredients for transforming to NFV, including converged infrastructure and telecom software as well as third party applications and services.

With this release HP adds new solution capabilities including: NFV Director 2.0, virtualized mobile core, HP API Management, and HP Multimedia Services Environment WebRTC Gateway Controller.

HP Grows NFV Solution Offerings

HP helps CSPs realize the benefits of NFV by offering solutions that implement virtual network functions (VNF) for key NFV use cases, as well as providing the required solutions for managing and orchestrating NFV. These now include:

  • NFV Director 2.0: Bringing together HP capabilities in operations support systems (OSS) and information technology management, NFV Director 2.0 provides a comprehensive, multivendor NFV orchestrator solution. This second generation solution further enriches orchestration capabilities to help clients entering the virtualization era by meeting operational needs in the mixed virtualized and non-virtualized environment. The solution now offers full support for HP Helion OpenStack technology and other OpenStack Juno distributions while further aligning with the European Telecom Standards Institute (ETSI).

  • New HP solutions for implementing virtualized mobile core: HP offers its customers choice in leveraging either its best-in-class HP components (infrastructure, orchestration, vHSS) as well as open third party components in pre-integrated packages to form complete e2e virtualized VNF solutions. These solutions include VNF functions such as vHSS, vPGW, vPCC, vMME, vSGW, and vMRF that deliver a full NFV-based mobile core network solution at minimal entry cost for maximum scalability and adaptability. This enables independence from carrier legacy systems and processes for flexible partner relationships, while also providing better protection of subscriber data. With dedicated 4G/LTE Network Core instances CSPs, ISVs, MVNOs, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) companies and enterprises can better tailor their network services, including optimization of Internet of Things traffic.

  • HP API Management and HP Multimedia Services Environment WebRTC Gateway Controller: These solutions will now be offered as VNF. A virtualized HP API Management solution allows CSPs to capitalize on new revenue streams of cloud services through apps and mashups, and accelerate the delivery of these differentiated cloud services. The virtualized HP Multimedia Services Environment WebRTC Gateway Controller provides CSPs with the ability to extend reach outside of their existing subscriber base and facilitate new app integration through built-in browser interfaces to better serve real-time business needs.

Availability
HP NFV Director 2.0, HP solutions for implementing virtualized mobile core, and the virtualized HP Multimedia Services Environment WebRTC Gateway Controller are available now. The virtualized HP API Management functionality will be available in calendar year 2015.
