ATLANTA -- CIENA Corporation, (NASDAQ:CIEN - news), a global provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced expanded capabilities for its MultiWave CoreDirector(TM) intelligent optical core switch. CIENA initially plans to leverage the scalability and industry-leading density of its CoreDirector platform to enable service providers to in-service upgrade their CoreDirector systems to multi-bay configurations with up to 3,072 OC-48/STM-16 equivalent optical ports per switch. CIENA believes that CoreDirector offers carriers the most capacity and functionality in the smallest footprint as the only optical switch with 256 ports (640Gbps bi-directional switching capacity) in a single bay, plus a full range of signal switching granularity spanning from entire wavelengths down to STS-1.In a separate release:CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN - news), a global provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced new capabilities for its MultiWave CoreStream(TM) optical transport system that are designed to address next-generation capacity and distance requirements in a single integrated system and to bring additional strategic and economic value to service provider networks. New capabilities include single-band 3.2 terabit-per-second (3.2Tbps) fiber capacity achieved through ultra-dense channel spacing, and the availability of CoreStream's FlexSpan(TM) feature set for ultra long-haul networking. "CIENA's new CoreStream capabilities are at the leading edge of technology development in long-haul DWDM, specifically ultra high capacity (UHC) and ultra long-haul (ULH) transport. Significantly, CIENA is offering service providers bandwidth scalability while enabling them to control capital spending - an increasingly important value proposition in this market," said Sterling Perrin, senior research analyst, optical networks, at IDC.Ciena Corp.
