Telecom Italia has both a fixed and wireless business, and it is converging those networks to create a common platform and gain efficiencies. All the while, the company envisions its network and services changing consumer lives. Telecom Italia may be the incumbent landline and mobile operator in Italy, but it certainly doesn't act like one. Incumbents are typically slow movers when it comes to innovation. Telecom Italia, however, is far ahead of its competitors on a number of fronts, whether it's 3G services or converged service offerings.


Brought to you by TellabsThe most high-profile trend in Europe's mobile communications today is a shift by network operators from offering stand-alone mobile services to providing converged mobile, broadband, landline communi­cations and entertainment services. A significant part of this strategy for Telecom Italia involves incorporating the Tellabs® 8800 Multiservice Router (MSR) Series and the Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System to collapse traffic from its UMTS/HSDPA mobile network, which transmits over ATM, onto Telecom Italia's existing Ethernet backbone that is already being used for broadband services.
