AMSTERDAM -- Liberty Global Wholesale, the wholesale unit of largest international cable company Liberty Global, has earned the Carrier Ethernet (CE) 2.0 certification to its Ethernet services across Europe. The certification is granted by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) and achieved thanks to selected network solutions from Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN). Liberty Global Wholesale is the first cable company to receive this certification on a Pan-European level.

The MEF is the defining body for Carrier Ethernet networks, and is dedicated to the worldwide adoption of Carrier Ethernet networks and services. The CE 2.0 certification describes the next generation of Carrier Ethernet with standardized multiple classes of services, as well as interconnect and manageability attributes across service types. CE 2.0 is a highly challenging and significant accreditation to achieve, and it creates an important standard of deployment for the industry.

Liberty Global Wholesale provides a complete range of access, voice and Internet wholesale services across its extensive fiber-based networks to more than 1,500 customers, including carriers, ISPs and mobile operators in 12 European markets. With the certification Liberty Global Wholesale is able to increase end-to-end network reach with improved multi-site connectivity and interoperability for multi-vendor network environments. Pre-tested service attributes streamline and accelerate provisioning, enable better SLAs and improve fault management. For our wholesale and corporate customers this provide greater reach, quality and service delivery on a national and pan-European scale.

Liberty Global is leveraging Ciena’s E-Suite family of packet switch modules. These platforms facilitate handoff between operators using MEF-defined External Network-to-Network Interfaces (ENNIs) and between operators and end-users using MEF User-to-Network Interfaces (UNIs) at client sites. Chris Coles, Managing Director Business Services at Liberty Global said: “The European wholesale services market is changing rapidly, and demand for high-bandwidth services that reliably transport all forms of data is growing exponentially. With Ciena’s technology we are able to provide certified Ethernet solutions and deliver on our commitment to ensure continuous development of our network as well as driving greater coordination and integration of our wholesale operations across Europe.”
