CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Deutsche Telekom has placed an orderwith Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) to supply andpower-on broadband network access technology from the Siemens subsidiaryUnisphere Networks, Inc. Unisphere’s ERX Edge Routing Switch providesbroadband access to the IP network and acts as a Broadband Remote AccessServer (BRAS) for the product T-DSL. The BRAS is the Internet entry pointvia which users dial in to the network of their Service Provider, such asT-Online. The BRAS thus allows Fast Internet and IP VPN services to beprovided cost-effectively for all T-DSL users. This order is already thebiggest yet placed in Europe for BRAS technology. The Broadband RemoteAccess Servers are scheduled to go into operation by the end of March thisyear.

Unisphere’s ERX will be employed as a broadband Remote Access Server (RAS)in Deutsche Telekom’s IP network as the basis for its AAA services(Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) ensuring secure Internet access.ERX will also permit video streaming over the Internet because it routes theIP packets at delay-free “wire speed”. The high data transmission rate isthanks to ERX’s hardware-based ASIC concept which, for design reasons, operates much faster than software-based solutions.
