Charter Posts HSD, Voice & Digital Gains as Basic Declines

Charter Communications reported its third quarter operating results today. While the MSO improved its high-speed data, voice and digital video subscriber additions in Q3, Charter's analog basic cable product suffered, losing 58,600 subscribers. During the first nine months of 2004 Charter has lost more than 125,000 basic cable customers. Charter increased its HSD subscriber additions to 108,000 in Q3, an 85% improvement over its dismal second quarter, bringing its installed base to 1.8 million as of September 30, Charter added 38,700 digital video customers in Q3, improving on its 7,200 subscriber loss in Q2, to finish the third quarter with 2.68 million digital subscribers. Of that total, Charter counted 76,000 customers with high definition services and has installed 61,000 digital video recorders. Turning to telephony, Charter's telephone-ready homes passed increased to 508,100 at the end of Q3 with 40,200 customers, a 28.8% gain over Q2 driven by the MSO's IP phone rollout.
