BEIJING -- The OpenDaylight Project, the networking industry’s largest open source project focused on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced that Alibaba Group, a leading platform for ecommerce and cloud computing, has joined the project at the Silver level.

Alibaba has innovatively designed its own SDN based solutions and integrated them into Alibaba’s network infrastructure, which has smoothly powered Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival and proved its reliability, scalability and cost-effectiveness. Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival is the world’s largest one-day online sales event in 2015. On 11.11, Alibaba attracted over 115 million buyers to its marketplaces and enabled RMB91.2 billion (US$14 billion) in GMV settled through Alipay on Alibaba’s platforms. Alibaba’s network infrastructure supported 467 million delivery orders during a 24-hour period and enabled about 140,000 peak transactions processed per second. To support all these, Alibaba’s network had to handle a surge of more than ten times the normal daily volume.

Alibaba’s practice in redefining the infrastructure enables its network to handle the traffic peak during the 11.11 Festival. Also, during the support of such online sale events, Alibaba has got a large amount of experience in deploying and operating SDN- based solutions, which are precious to the system designers and developers. Those experiences could be contributed to OpenDaylight during the collaboration between Alibaba and OpenDaylight.
