SerComm Gets Certified
Taiwan-based SerComm becomes the eighth vendor to win CableLabs certification for a super-speedy cable modem
SerComm Corp. , a Taiwan-based supplier of consumer-side broadband gear, has been Docsis 3.0 certified by CableLabs following Wave 63, CableLabs's most recent grouping of product tests.
Postings on the CableLabs site reveal a busy round of testing that resulted primarily in a big batch of re-certifications of Docsis 3.0 standalone modems and embedded multimedia terminal adapters (E-MTAs) that obtained approvals in previous test waves.
Of the group to win the 3.0 stamp this time, only SerComm made it through with a new cable modem product. Seven other vendors -- Ambit Broadband , Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS) (two products), Hitron Technologies Inc. , Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) (two products), Netgear Inc. (Nasdaq: NTGR), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) (two products), and SMC Networks Inc. -- all gathered re-certifications. So far, CableLabs has not listed any new Docsis 3.0 qualification cable modem termination systems (CMTSs) results following Wave 63.
With the latest results factored in, here's the latest list of vendors and models to win Docsis 3.0 approvals:

* CableLabs presently uses a tiered CMTS qualification system, awarding "Bronze," "Silver," and "Full" designations based on the product's supported features. That tiered system is expected to sunset in early 2009. |
Officials for Taipei, Taiwan-based SerComm were not immediately available Monday to discuss the newly certified product, listed as the "FM301T" on the CableLabs Docsis testing results page. The company appears to be brand new to the cable modem scene, as it has not previously obtained certification for any Docsis products.
SerComm's new modem will join a fairly broad line of IP surveillance cameras, wireless routers and access points, ADSL gateways, and HomePlug adapters. Given SerComm's home networking expertise, it's likely the vendor has developed a Docsis 3.0 modem/gateway that will be targeted to cable operators in Asia, considered a hotbed for Docsis 3.0 or "Wideband" service deployments these days.
