CableLabs Strategy Chief Resigns

CableLabs EVP and Chief Strategy Officer David Reed has resigned, the R&D house said, confirming a report by Multichannel News. The departure of Reed is one of the first big personnel changes at CableLabs since May when it hired new CEO and former HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) CTO Phil McKinney, who succeeded Dr. Paul Liao. Reed joined CableLabs in 1994 and was promoted to CTO in 2000. CableLabs wouldn't comment on who was taking over Reed's role or if it intends to seek a replacement. Comcast Business has rolled out its cloud-based VoiceEdge service to California, and now markets its hosted PBX offering in 20 states, with plans to offer it in all markets by year's end. Comcast is using VoiceEdge, based on the BroadSoft Inc. platform, to target businesses with up to 250 employees. (See Comcast Rolls Business Voice Into the Cloud.)
Kathleen "Kip" Mayo is the latest ex-Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) exec to reunite with Tom Rutledge at Charter Communications Inc. , signing on as EVP, customer operations. Tom Adams, previously with Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC), has also joined Charter as EVP, field operations. Mayo's first day with Charter was Monday (Sept. 17), and Adams will start on Oct. 1. Areum Broadcasting Network (ABN) of South Korea is deploying Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS)'s switched digital video platform to free up bandwidth for more HDTV programming and video-on-demand capacity in Seongnam City. Arris, which expanded its SDV horizons via the acquisition of BigBand Networks Inc., says its switching platform is now deployed to 39 million homes passed. (See Arris Snaps Up BigBand .)
BendBroadband of Oregon has rolled out a free iPad app that lets video subscribers use the tablet as a fancy remote control and manage their DVR remotely in tandem with Arris's whole-home Moxi video gateway/HD-DVR. (See BendBroadband Rolls Arris's Video Gateway.)
Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) has revealed five appointed and eight elected members of the board for the 2012/2013 term, including Mike LaJoie, the EVP and CTO of TW Cable, who's been reappointed as director. Among those elected are four newcomers: CableLabs CTO Ralph Brown; TW Cable Group VP and Chief Learning Officer Pat Crull, PhD; CommScope Inc. SVP of Global Broadband Sales Jim Hughes; and Comcast Cable SVP and Comcast University CLO Martha Soehren, PhD.
