CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- MRV Communications, Inc. (MRVC) (“MRV”), aglobal provider of innovative packet and optical solutions, announces the release of the OptiPacket OP-X1 access platform, designed to extend 100Gbps Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) capabilities to the last mile. Delivering a flexible mix of 100Gbps and 10Gbps Ethernet interfaces and 800Gbps of switching capacity, the OP-X1 enables service critical bandwidth extension to 100Gbps customers and/or to a large number of 10Gbps customers in a dense 2RU format. At less than 0.7 Watts per Gbps, the OP-X1 continues the OptiPacket family tradition of offering the industry’s lowest power cost per bit for switching platforms. The OP-X1 operating system is based on MRV’s MasterOS, an open Linux software platform that is deployed on all of MRV’s switching products and provides a clear path to SDN and NFV. The OP-X1 shares common hardware interface cards with the OP-X4 3.2Tbps chassis, allowing flexibility in service offerings, expandability to higher capacity, and a complete end-to-end metro network capability.

The OptiPacket family of packet optical devices builds on MRV’s broader strategy to empower the optical edge by accelerating packet optical convergence with innovative hardware and intelligent software. The OP-X series of products combines the field-proven technology and expertise of MRV’s optical and packet product families into an all-in-one, highly flexible, intelligent architecture. By optimizing the platform for packet, optical and converged packet-optical networks, MRV is enabling service providers to seamlessly deliver multilayer services over the same metro service edge. This, along with the solution’s industry-leading bandwidth capacity, port density and power efficiency, makes it easier for service providers to manage unpredictable bandwidth demands at an extremely attractive price point. In addition, the use of powerful X86 CPUs and the added management intelligence incorporated in the platform allows the same service providers to use this platform as a strong foundation for their plans in the software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) arenas.
