Zolo Buys Grating Maker

LOUISVILLE, Colo. -- Zolo Technologies Inc., an emerging optical networking sub-systems developer and manufacturer, today announced a definitive purchase agreement with leading grating supplier Hyperfine, Inc. The company plans to close the acquisition later this year. Hyperfine, Inc., headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, was founded by Bernhard Bach in 1969 to produce the highest quality holographic and diffraction gratings. Bach, protégé to grating expert David Richardson of the world-renowned Richardson Grating Labs (renamed Thermo RGL), has more than 40 years of experience in the field of diffraction gratings and is considered one of the world’s authorities in the field. Since the company’s inception, Hyperfine has become the world leader in both ruling and replicating optical gratings used in atmospheric research, laser radars, optical computing and telecommunications.

“This acquisition enables us to deliver on our promise to produce the ZmuxTM product line in high-volume while ensuring a high-performance product at a low cost-per-channel,” said Ed Barbera, CEO and co-founder of Zolo Technologies. “Without question, Hyperfine is the world’s leading grating manufacturer since they can both rule and replicate the diffraction gratings used in our DWDM devices. Most grating suppliers focus on the replication aspects of gratings but do not have the ability to rule masters from which to replicate. By combining Zolo and Hyperfine, we feel extremely confident that we will create a world-leader in grating-based optical networking subsystems.”
