Zarlink semiconductor sets new performance and quality benchmarks for IP networking

OTTAWA -- Zarlink Semiconductor (NYSE/TSE:ZL) has produced samples of an industry-leading TDM-to-IP network access processor that, for the first time, will allow network operators to cost-effectively deliver one of their most profitable services - the T1/E1 voice/data TDM line - over IP packet networks. Zarlink's new device is the industry's first high density, purpose-built network access processor for emulating and carrying TDM services over IP networks or Ethernet MANs (metropolitan area networks). With this capability - know as CESoP - network operators and their customers can cost-effectively transport TDM services over shared IP/Ethernet facilities, while preserving investments in TDM network edge equipment. Based on patent-pending algorithms that overcome CESoP timing and synchronization issues, Zarlink's new processor emulates up to 32 T1/E1 lines, comprised of 1,024 TDM circuits, over IP/Ethernet links. In contrast, a single high-powered, conventional microprocessor can achieve only four to five T1/E1 lines, and is unable to guarantee carrier-grade quality for voice or other TDM services. "Tests with our global alpha customers prove that Zarlink's new network access processor meets their performance, density and price requirements for emulating T1/E1 leased lines and other profitable TDM services over IP/Ethernet networks," said Jeremy Lewis, TDM-to-IP product line manager, Zarlink Semiconductor.
