ALLEN, Texas -- Xtera Communications Inc. (www.xtera.com ), the long-haul and ultra-long-haul optical networking company that recently completed its second round of financing for $110 million, today announced the world's first 10-gigabit/second transmission through cascaded discrete Raman amplifiers in the S-band. The 16-channel transmission was a technological breakthrough, opening up bandwidth previously untapped by commercial optical networking products. Currently deployed dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems transmit in the C-band (1530 to 1565 nm) and the L-band (1570 to 1610 nm). The Xtera eXpander System Integral is the world's first commercially available product to expand the usable bandwidth of fiber into the window between 1485 and 1525 nm, supporting 50 GHZ spacing in the S-band.

"The trial demonstrates Xtera's ability to leverage our intellectual property with the optical expertise of our development team to expand usable bandwidth on existing fiber," according to Herve Fevrier, Xtera Vice President of Photonic Systems. "The innovative use of Raman amplifiers is a breakthrough in commercial applications of tested laboratory technologies. Getting more bandwidth out of existing fiber is far more cost effective for carriers than lighting new fiber. It is all about delivering the best cost per gigabit per kilometer."
