SAN JOSE, Calif. -- At the Programmable World 2003 show today, Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX), announced the immediate availability of its RocketPHY family of devices - the FPGA industry's first 10 Gbps silicon. Based on a standard CMOS technology, the RocketPHY family of physical layer transceivers (PHYs) provides optimal performance, cost, and power consumption through the integration of transmitter and receiver functions and key features that help simplify the cost and complexity of design. Xilinx is the first programmable logic supplier - and among the first in the ASIC market - to deliver CMOS solutions at 10 Gbps that meet SONET compliant jitter.

Xilinx RocketPHY 10 Gbps serial to 16-bit transceivers seamlessly interface to the industry's leading Virtex-II PRO FPGA families in addition to standard Framer and Media Access Controller (MAC) ASSPs, through a highly flexible 16-bit LVDS interface which is compliant to both OIF SFI-4 and IEEE 802.3ae XSBI standards.

"Today's launch of our RocketPHY 10 Gbps family extends our leadership position and demonstrates our prowess in designing and delivering high speed serial technologies," said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president and general manager of the Programmable Logic Systems Group at Xilinx. "A key component of our vision to deliver leading edge serial solutions began with our acquisition of RocketChips approximately two years ago. This strategic move brought R&D expertise into Xilinx that's absolutely essential for the successful deployment of serial connectivity solutions. Today, a team within the Communication Technology Division (CTD) is wholly focused on advanced projects such as RocketPHY, aimed at making the Serial Tsunami vision a reality."

In related news today, Xilinx unveiled its Virtex-II Pro X FPGA architecture - the world's first FPGA to incorporate 10 Gbps serial transceivers. When combined with RocketPHY physical layer transceivers, Virtex-II Pro X FPGAs can deliver comprehensive solutions for 10 Gbps SONET, Fibre Channel, and Ethernet applications from the optical module through the backplane. By providing footprint compatibility between Virtex-II Pro and Virtex-II Pro X FPGA families, Xilinx is the world's only supplier to provide such a wide range of serial connectivity solutions, from 622 Mbps to 10.709 Gbps. This extensive scalability provides designers with a proven path to meet evolving system requirements today and tomorrow.
